Of course, the wax type and fragrance are important, but the wick is the candle's life line. Candle makers know wax, fragrance type; wax temperature, dyes, additives and container size will determine which wick to make use of.
Properly wicking a candle takes hours and hours of testing. Wicks work by "whisking" the fuel (wax) to the flame where it is consumed. Wick types include, cotton, paper cored, zinc cored and they fall under their parent categories of cored, square or flat.
Lead wicks are no longer used by American candle makers, however it is unknown if foreign competitors follow the same safety standard on imported candles.
We use cotton and paper cored wicks in our soy candles.
