Soy Jar Candles
8/17/2010

Soy wax is produced from one of this countries greatest renewable resources – Soy Beans. Purchasing candles made from soy beans/wax supports hardworking farmers, their families and community and the U.S.A.
Soy candles are non-toxic, an excellent choice for those of you wishing to burn environmentally friendly candles.
Soy wax candles burn cooler than paraffin candles, thus increasing their burn time. Since soy wax candles have a lower melt point, it’s best to keep them away from direct sunlight. Excess heat will cause the candle to sweat. If this happens, place the candle in the refrigerator and it will quickly return to normal.
One of the most common characteristics of container candles made from soy as well as paraffin is commonly called wet spots. These spots are caused by the wax separating or shrinking away from the glass. Wet spots are often described as air bubbles, they are a entirely cosmetic and will not affect the way the candle burns or smells. It is important to note that wet spots have a mind of their own and may occur over time. The candle’s wax expands and contracts with changes in air temperature. Since glass and wax expand and contract at different rates, wet spots may appear and disappear many times over.
Sunlight and fluorescent lighting will affect soy candles, sometimes causing them to turn yellow. In our experience, this circumstance most often occurs with candles made with vanilla based fragrance oils. Take care to keep the candles away from direct light as much as possible.
All candles will develop a “burning memory” during their first burn. It is recommended that you allow your new candle to burn one hour for each inch of its diameter.
~Container Soy Candles: 2″ diameter equals a two hour initial burn….4″ diameter equals a four hour initial burn. The candle’s melt pool must reach the edges of the jar.

What Does Triple Scented Soy Candle Actually Mean?
8/1/2010

Quite often when I am scoping out the competition, I run across websites that advertise that their candles are "triple scented." That sounds great, right? The more the better, but what does "triple scented" actually mean?
First, it’s hard to define triple scented. Triple scented from what amount? One needs to know what X is before one can solve for Y. Wax manufacturers give us guidelines on how much fragrance a specific soy wax can hold. On an average it is 1.0-1.5 ounces per pound of wax. Some fragrances are a lot stronger so less is required. That’s were testing comes in.
Here’s an analogy: Think of wax as a glass of iced tea and sugar as the fragrance. The right amount of sugar dissolves perfectly and the tea tastes great! Add too much sugar and it will not dissolve; the tea has been saturated with the sugar and the sugar will sink to the bottom of the glass. I've read another great analogy involving a sponge and water. You get the idea. The same rules apply to wax and fragrance. Too much fragrance added to a candle is wasted like the sugar mentioned above. Too much fragrance is not a good thing. Too much fragrance will produce a candle that will not burn properly, creating large amounts of soot. Too much fragrance will produce a hazardous candle!
We use 7-9% fragrance in our candles, depending on the fragrance. If we were to actually triple scent, we’d be required to use over 20% fragrance oil…and that high amount of oil contained in a candle would be dangerous.
So…we’re back to
what triple scenting actually means. Reputable candle makers adhere to
their wax manufacturer’s fragrance load guidelines and produce great
burning, great smelling candles. I would define the fragrance amounts in
their candles with adjectives like "strongly", "highly" or "maximum."
They are all the same really. We choose to use the wording: "strongly
fragranced soy candles". Using the description "triple scent" is a play
on words and a great marketing maneuver. It leads you the consumer to
think that you are getting more of a good thing, but are you really?

Anatomy and Physiology of a Soy Candle
7/14/2010

Overview... The anatomy, components or ingredients that go into making a soy candle are straightforward. The basics include a container, soy wax, wick and fragrance. The physiology or how the components work together is the most challenging part of producing a wonderful smelling, perfect burning soy candle.
Tuck away the meaning of the word “test”, as it will come into play once you select your ingredients and any time in the future that you decide to introduce a new component.
A simple search on the net will yield suppliers who offer the components. Search terms might include soy wax, glass jars, candle jars, candle containers, wicks, candle wick, candle wicking, fragrance oil, scented oil or fragrance oil for candles. Component suppliers are located across the United States. Locating a supplier within driving distance is a standard to shoot for, especially for purchasing soy wax. Wax is weighty; you may be shocked at the cost of shipping. In addition, if you can actually smell the candle fragrances you will have a step up on those who rely on the scent descriptions explained on a distant website.
In the next segment, we will cover the different aspects of each component. They are numerous.
